Summary

The Sawston Greenway is a proposed route to enable cyclists, walkers and equestrians to travel sustainably from Sawston into Cambridge.

Sawston Greenway Proposed Route

Background

The Sawston Greenway is a proposed route to enable cyclists, walkers and equestrians to travel sustainably from Sawston into Cambridge.

Following a public consultation on this route, an analysis is now underway to determine how to best progress the project.

This scheme was approved by the GCP Executive Board on 01 October 2020.

The Sawston Greenway is one route within a wider and developing sustainable travel network that is being created by the Greater Cambridge Partnership. This will create a network of walking, cycling and equestrian routes within the local area and could form the backbone of a larger more comprehensive network, which could be built if funding is granted. Where possible, smaller links between villages may be addressed where there has been particular support from local residents. The Greenways team continue to welcome feedback on potential future links as the Greater Cambridge. Greenways is a project steered by the local communities it aims to serve.

GSPC’s Sawston Greenway Survey Results

December 2022 – Great Shelford Parish Council’s Response to the Sawston Greenway Consultation

Current Position

GSPC supports the Greenways initiative and the Sawston Greenway and would like to explore ways to extend the Greenway through Great Shelford and improve the cycling safety of young people travelling from Great Shelford to Sawston Village College.

GSPC notes that this initiative can connect with the Light Rail or CSET proposals and is likely to proceed.

There is potential to benefit Great Shelford as part of the network of neighbouring villages. To explore this opportunity support would be needed from local residents and liaison with the Greenways team.

A survey of local people’s support for these initiatives was carried out online in early summer 2021.
